        Note To Editors and News Directors:

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will hold a ceremony to mark the successful completion and start of radioactive operations of the Glass Waste Storage Building #2 (GWSB#2) at the Savannah River Site (SRS) on Monday, July 10, 2006.  SRS’s Defense Waste Processing Facility vitrifies radioactive liquid waste and seals it in stainless steel canisters.  GWSB#1 and the newly completed GWSB#2 will provide for the safe, temporary storage of these canisters until their permanent transfer to a repository. 

 

 WHAT:                      A DOE ceremony to mark the successful completion and start of radioactive operations of Glass Waste Storage Building #2.  The ceremony will include remarks, a ribbon-cutting, and transportation of the first canister to the new facility.

WHERE:                    Savannah River Site in Aiken , South Carolina .

 WHEN:                       Monday, July 10, 2006 , at 1:00 PM

 WHO:                         Senior officials from DOE-Headquarters, DOE-Savannah River , and Washington Savannah River Company will give remarks and participate in a ribbon-cutting for the new storage facility. 

 

If you plan to attend Monday’s event, please contact Laurie Posey at (803) 952-8994 or by e-mail at laurie.posey@srs.gov by 9 AM Monday, July 10, 2006 .  All reporters, photographers, and film crews should arrive at the SRS Badge Office no later than 12 Noon on Monday, July 10.  SRS has new badging requirements, and it takes about 20 minutes to check-in.  Two forms of identification will be required.  Transportation will be provided from the SRS Badge Office to the ceremony site and back.
